Toestimatedetailedcontributionsofparticulateorganiccarbon(POC)asapotentialfoodsourcein variousenvironmentsoftheArcticseaice floes, intensiveinvestigationswereexecutedattwodifferent types ofseaicestations(ST1andST2)inthenorthernChukchiSeaduringthesummerperiodin2011. The averageuptakeratesofcarbonandnitrogeninmeltpondsfromthisstudywerewithintherange measured previously.ThesurfaceiceofmeltpondsatST1hadthehighestPOCconcentrationwith a meanof148.0mgCm 3 (S.D.¼786.0 mgCm 3), followedbyseaicecoresatST2(mean7S.D.¼ 125.77128.2mgCm 3). ThePOCconcentrationsinmeltpondsrangedbetween90.0mgCm 3 (S.D.¼712.7mgCm 3) and103.9mgCm 3 (S.D.¼747.7mgCm 3) atST1andST2,respectively. MajorPOCcontributorstomeltpondswerediatomswithameanbiovolumecontributionof48.7% (S.D.¼739.1%)whichwasstronglyrelatedto in situ salinity.AlthoughthetotalPOCconcentrationof entire seaice floes rangedfrom2.8%to5.3%ofthePOCconcentrationwithintheeuphoticwatercolumn at thestudylocations,thecarboncontributionofseaice floes couldbeimportanttohighertrophiclevels because oftheconcentratedPOCwithinseaice floes.-
