Study on the Establishment of Korean Names and Naming Principles for Antarctic Fish Species

Abstract

Fish inhabiting the Southern Ocean exhibit unique physiological and morphological adaptations to extreme environments and play a vital role in the ecosystem. However, in South Korea, the standardized Korean nomenclature for Antarctic fish species has not been systematically established, posing challenges for academic research and educational resource development. This study aims to establish Korean names for 147 species of fish inhabiting the Southern Ocean, including those with existing Korean names, and to present the principles and methodology applied in the naming process. Based on a review of existing literature, we examined the naming conventions employed by the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) and the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI). We established naming principles that consider ecological and morphological characteristics. Furthermore, we ensured consistency by aligning the newly proposed names with internationally recognized scientific and English names. The results indicate that names reflecting habitat and morphological or ecological traits are effective in enhancing public understanding, and that maintaining continuity with existing Korean names is essential. This study is expected to contribute to future research on Antarctic fish and the development of educational resources.

본 연구는 남극암치아목 (Notothenioidei)의 5개 과 (Family)에 속하는 남극 어류 147종에 대한 국문명을 제정하고, 과학적·언어적 일관성을 고려한 명명 원칙을 수립하였다. 특히 생태적·형태적 특성을 반영한 명명 기준을 도입함으로써 기존 명명 방식의 한계를 보완하고, 국제적인 조화를 고려한 명명 체계를 구축하였다. 향후 연구에서는 명명 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 문제점을 지속적으로 보완하고, 학술 및 교육 분야에서 활용될 수 있도록 추가적인 연구가 필요하다.
