ThefreshwaterbudgetoftheArcticOceanisakeycomponentgoverningthedeepwaterformationinthe North Atlanticandtheglobalclimatesystem.Weanalyzedtheisotopiccompositionofneodymium(εNd) in authigenicphasesofmarinesedimentsontheMendeleevRidgeinthewesternArcticOceanspanningan estimatedtimeintervalfrompresenttoabout75kaBP.Thiscontinuousrecordwasusedtoreconstructthe εNd of thepolardeepwater(PDW)andchangesinfreshwatersourcestothePDWthroughtime.Threedeviations in εNd fromalongtermaverageof ? 10.2wereidentified atestimated46? 51,35? 39 and13? 21 kaBP.The estimated46? 51kaBPeventcanbetracedtoburstingofice-dammedlakesaccompanyingthecollapseofthe Barents? KaraIceSheet,whichwouldhavereleasedradiogenicNdtotheeasternArcticOcean.Thecyclonic surfacecirculationintheeasternArcticOceanmusthavebeenstrongerthanatpresentfortheeventtobe recordedontheMendeleevRidge.Forthe35? 39 and13? 21kaBPevents,itislikelythattheLaurentideIce Sheet (LIS)suppliedtheunradiogenicfreshwater.Theconfigurationoftheanticycloniccirculationinthe westernArcticwasprobablysimilartotodayorexpandedeastward.Oursimplemassbalancecalculations suggestthatlargeamountsoffreshwaterwerereleasedbutduetosignificant deepwaterformationwithinthe ArcticOcean,theeffectontheformationofNADWwasprobablyminor.sternArcticOceanspanningan estimatedtimeintervalfrompresenttoabout75kaBP.Thiscontinuousrecordwasusedtoreconstructthe εNd of thepolardeepwater(PDW)andchangesinfreshwatersourcestothePDWthroughtime.Threedeviations in εNd fromalongtermaverageof ? 10.2wereidentified atestimated46? 51,35? 39 and13? 21 kaBP.The estimated46? 51kaBPeventcanbetracedtoburstingofice-dammedlakesaccompanyingthecollapseofthe Barents?
